Apples Reign of Terror (By: Winston Chan)
Ups and Downs: Apple’s “Technuclear” War Against Android
Rumors are beginning to pulse around the Apple community about introducing a cheaper iPhone or iPad in order to attract more buyers and increase market share. If we take the numbers into contrast, Apple currently stands at 15% market share on a global scale while Android owns 75%, according to IDC’s recent data. But realistically, this shouldn’t be a surprise since Google is the developer for Android. And so, CEO Phil Schiller (Apple’s head of worldwide marketing) said, “The company isn’t after market share but to deliver the best products.” Thus being the reason why Apple is “struggling” to keep up with Android.
But let’s look at these numbers from another perspective and with more details. According to research, 80% of the entire cellphone industry currently belongs to Apple. Secondly, iOS – operating system for Apple’s iDevices (is an official terminology coined by Apple to refer any mobile electronic devices that start with “I”, such as the iPod and iPhone) generates most of the revenue of mobile advertising. In fact, Google makes more money from advertising for Apple’s iOS than from its own Android. Moreover, iPhone and iPad owners seems to use their devices a lot more than Android users, as well as spending more money in in-app purchases and the Apps Store. Furthermore, working for Apple’s iOS branch does have its advantages. Apple paid $7 billion to their operating system developers, while a check from Google accounts for several million only. Meaning Apple will continue to prevail and Android along with other phone and tablet operating system such as MeeGo and Bada will slowly disappear. Hence, several phones and tablets manufactures such as Samsung, are now preparing for the switch of using other operating systems. It has been confirmed that Samsung will be integrating their electronics devices with an operating system developed by The Linux Foundation –Tizen OS.
